二〇〇三年春，SARS病毒突袭北京，一座充满活力的动感之都转瞬之间就陷入了沉寂、惶恐和萧条之中。在主任医师陈家辉的隔离病区，五天来已有两个病人被SARS病毒夺去了生命，而秦老教授在消毒室被感染后，使整个病室顿时紧张了起来。秦老教授病倒后，常年跑乘警的袁志恒也因护送SARS病人感染而住进了隔离区。袁志恒和护士长夏露原是一对离异多年的夫妻，虽然夏露强装不认，但他还是认出了自己多年来依然眷恋的妻子。然而，还没来得及团聚，袁志恒就在对妻子的愧疚中永远的合上了眼睛。\"小燕子\"治愈出院了，秦老教授也在他提出的中西医疗法中完全康复，而曹美英护士却在随后的护理中不幸被SARS病毒感染。曹美英原计划\"五·一\"与男朋友结婚，可当男朋友手捧鲜花出现在隔离区外时，她却带着深深爱意离开了这个战斗的集体。就在大家为美英的离去而痛苦时，陈家辉主任的爱人在隔窗相望的产房向他们报告了母子平好的消息，看着妻子放飞的一束红气球，一种美好的希望和必胜的信心在每一个人的心中冉冉地升腾。
